Partnering With Nigerian Society Of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) And Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) On Essential New Born Care Workshop
- Nigeria is one of 10 countries that contribute to two-thirds of all newborn deaths worldwide. It has the highest number of newborn deaths in Africa and second highest globally.
- Three main killers are, Prematurity (33%), Birth Asphyxia (29%) and Neonatal infection (16%). It has been documented that 90% of these deaths are preventable.
- To further support government efforts to reduce neonatal mortality by helping babies survive in Nigeria, on the 19th and 20th of October 2017, the NNIA partnered with Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on an essential New Born Care Workshop. The workshop was conducted to help build HCPs skills in tackling the top 3 main causes (78%) of neonatal death.
A total of 57 healthcare professionals drawn from Lagos University Teaching Hospital and other healthcare facilities in its environment were trained by 5 facilitators, which includes Prof. Chinyere Ezeaka, President of the Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine. He stated that although the first day of life is the riskiest day in one’s life, updating knowledge and improving skills of frontline health workers on the care of the newborn will go a long way in raising newborn advocates in various facilities and reducing neonatal mortality.
Participants were urged to roll out the training at their various centers and units. All participants also went home with their training manuals/ providers guide. Facilities were also given Mannequins plus bag and masks (Ambubags) for trainings other HCPs at their various centres.
