Alex BulamboIn the heart of Mzuzu City, Malawi, is a healthcare professional on a mission to transform lives and combat the pervasive issue of malnutrition. Meet Alex Lengson Bulambo, a dedicated and passionate healthcare practitioner whose commitment to improving nutritional health has led him on a remarkable journey of education, empowerment, and community impact.

Alex was inspired by his mother’s volunteer work in the healthcare industry in their local community. Witnessing her dedication and the impact she made on the community ignited his passion for healthcare. From a young age, he knew he wanted to work with patients in a hospital setting.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery from Kamuzu College of Nursing, University of Malawi, in February 2018. His pursuit of knowledge didn't end there; he actively sought opportunities to expand his horizons. He acquired additional qualifications from prestigious institutions like the Johns Hopkins Nursing Institute, Boston University School of Medicine, and Washington University. These achievements encompass certificates in Nursing and Nutrition, Pediatric Nutrition, Project Management in Global Health, Leadership and Management in Health Systems, as well as Conducting Research Responsibly in Global Health.

He participated in NNIA Learning Programmes to further expand his expertise.

He completed two vital programmes offered by NNIA:

  1. Postgraduate Certificate in Pediatric Nutrition (2020)
  2. Certificate in Nursing and Nutrition (2021)

These programmes  have provided Alex with a robust foundation in nutrition and equipped him with the tools needed to address the pressing nutritional challenges in his community.

He actively shares the knowledge and expertise gained through NNIA programmes with his colleagues. He conducts presentations at Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions, empowering fellow healthcare professionals to address nutrition-related issues such as anaemia and stunting from early pregnancy through adulthood.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed and have made an impact on healthcare professionals working closely with him. Recently, nine nurses, inspired by Alex's commitment to improving nutritional health in their community, completed one or more NNIA programmes.
