Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases, occurring in 1 in 300 children by age 18. T1DM is typically diagnosed between 4 and 6 years or 10 and 14 years of age but can occur at any age.
The incidence has been increasing worldwide at a rate of 2 to 5% and greater increases in children ages 10 to 19 years have been noted. Watch the presentation by Dr Tedla Kebede as he details the pathophysiology of T1DM, diagnosis and medical treatment.
