Around the 1930’s, scientists discovered that the type of lactose found in human breastmilk contains a carbohydrate fraction, which they were able to characterise as the bifidogenic factor consisting of oligosaccharides. 1

These bioactive carbohydrate-containing molecules (glycans) are now widely recognised to provide important health benefits. Subsequently, the most abundant oligosaccharides in human breastmilk were characterised and ongoing research aims to explore the metabolic and health benefits of these human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) for infants and their mothers. 2
